I am relatively new to turkey hunting. My first time out was about seven years ago when I went with a great group of friends. It is still the best day I have had in my turkey hunting career!
We decided about ten o’clock that Saturday morning that we were going to hit the turkey woods. So, we threw on our camo, grabbed our shot guns, and hit up the convenience store, before we left town, to snag a burrito and drinks. From the store, we went straight to the honey hole. When we got there, we loaded our shot guns, and snuck about 150 yards to a berm. We stealthily peeked over the top of the berm, and saw several toms with hens in the shade of some trees approximately 75 yards away. We laid on our bellies, lined up like a camo clad firing squad, and began to call. Several gentle purrs and a few yelps later, we had two strutting toms coming our way! My adrenaline surged as they moved closer and closer! The two hen-pecked toms came from right to left in front of us, not knowing that in a few moments their lives would be coming to a dead-end. On the count of three, we pulled the triggers on our twelve-gauge shotguns, and the turkey loads slammed into the beaks of those two love-sick birds! When the dust settled and the smoke cleared, two of us had harvested great birds. My tom had three beards, and my friends bird had about a nine inch beard! All in all, the hunt lasted twenty minutes from the time we left the convenience store. It was incredible, to say the least!
From that day forward, I’ve been hooked on turkey hunting. So, this year when you head out to the turkey woods, take a friend or kid with you. There is no better way, in my opinion, to spend a Spring morning than chasing long beards with great friends!
Happy hunting, to all my fellow Okie boys and gals!
