You’re not going to believe what I am about to say, and to be honest I can’t either, but one of the best days to go turkey hunting is when those dark gray clouds roll across the open prairies of the Great State of Oklahoma! In other words, RAIN! Really? Most hunters lay in bed saying that old nursery rhyme “rain rain go away come again another day” hoping that their morning turkey hunt won’t be spoiled by the down pouring rain. I would contend, as many other veteran hunters, that the rainy days are the best to be in the field! So get up out of bed, put on your rain gear, grab your blind and get out there for a great morning of turkey hunting…Why you ask? Here are a few reasons turkey hunting in the rain is the best…
TURKEYS LOVE TO EAT IN THE RAIN
When the rain falls the bugs come out and seeds come to the top. Therefore the turkeys find it extremely easy to dominate the buffet. This will often times lead the birds to the open fields when they might not otherwise be there. On these days try staying out all day set up on the fields, the birds will come at all times of the day.
TURKEYS IMPAIRED SENSES
For the new hunter, you must know that the turkey has incredible eye sight! They are able to pick out any movement with immediate accuracy, mix this with their weariness to danger and you realize the caution you must take when trying to hunt turkeys. In the rain, though not completely disabled, you will find that the turkeys vision is impaired some. The rain distracts the line of sight and makes it a little more difficult for the turkey to have clear vision. This does not mean you should relax at your concealment process, go all out still and you will have a great day of hunting. The hearing is also impaired by rain due to the noise cover provided by the pounding drops. Both great for the hunter, not so great for the hunted.
TURKEYS LOVE THE RAIN
Contrary to popular belief the turkey doesn’t just sit on the roost all day, especially during breeding season, when it rains. If anything rain brings together two of the turkeys loves by providing a great meal spread and the possibility of shacking up with that lonely hen. Turkey’s love rain!
So next time the forecast predicts rain use it as an excuse to hunt not as an excuse to sleep. Turkey’s love rain and you will too after you try hunting in it once!
